Warmth Built for Every Freedive

What factors matter most when choosing a freediving wetsuit?

Choosing the right freediving wetsuit comes down to thickness, construction, and how much warmth you need. Lighter suits like the Tokugawa Nylon 3mm work for warm water and shorter sessions, while thicker options like the Seppia 7mm hold in heat during longer, colder dives. Open-cell designs like the Tokugawa Open Cell w/Hood grip tighter against the skin for less water flushing, though they take more care to put on. Whether you choose a one-piece or two-piece style, match the thickness to your typical water temperature and dive time.

  1. Reinforced Knee Panels

NYLON-LINED ONE-PIECE SUIT WITH REINFORCED KNEE PADS

The Tokugawa Nylon's durable exterior and padded knees hold up to kneeling on the seafloor during spearfishing.

  2. Extra Warmth Camo

THICKER OPEN-CELL CAMO SUIT FOR COLDER WATER

The Seppia 7mm adds extra thickness to the same open-cell camo build for longer, colder sessions.

  3. Camo for Stealth

OPEN-CELL CAMO SUIT FOR MID-DEPTH SPEARFISHING

The Seppia 5mm's open-cell camo neoprene blends into the water, built for spearfishing in moderate temperatures.

  4. Heavier Camo Suit

THICKER OPEN-CELL CAMO SUIT FOR COOLER SPEARFISHING

The Lampuga 5mm steps up the thickness for spearfishing in cooler water while keeping the same camo profile.

  5. Lightweight Camo Suit

OPEN-CELL CAMO SUIT FOR WARMER SPEARFISHING WATERS

The Lampuga 3mm's lighter open-cell camo build keeps you agile for spearfishing in warmer water.

  6. Cold-Water Spear Suit

THICKER HOODED SUIT WITH REINFORCED CHEST SUPPORT

The Apnea 7mm adds warmth and the same reinforced chest support, built for colder freediving and spearfishing dives.

  7. Spear Gun Ready

HOODED TWO-PIECE SUIT WITH REINFORCED CHEST SUPPORT

The Apnea 3.5mm's reinforced chest panel eases spear gun load, a hooded suit for lighter freediving and spearfishing sessions.

  8. Maximum Warmth Retention

OPEN-CELL HOODED SUIT FOR THE COLDEST DIVES

The Tokugawa Open Cell w/Hood grips tight against the skin, sealing in warmth for the coldest freediving conditions.

  • Can you freedive with a surf wetsuit?

A surf wetsuit is not ideal for freediving. Surf wetsuits use nylon-lined neoprene built for durability and repeated paddling, which traps water and adds drag with every kick. Freediving wetsuits like Cressi's open-cell designs use bare neoprene against the skin, creating a tighter seal that holds in warmth and reduces water flushing. Open-cell suits are also more flexible through the chest and shoulders for a full breath before diving. A surf wetsuit will keep you warm at the surface, but it works against you once you start diving down.

  • Are custom-fit wetsuits worth it for freediving?

True custom-fit wetsuits are not necessary for most freedivers, but getting the right fit absolutely matters. Cressi's open-cell freediving wetsuits, like the Seppia and Lampuga lines, rely on a snug, second-skin fit to trap a thin layer of water against your body and hold in warmth. A suit that is too loose lets cold water flush through with every kick, while one that is too tight restricts the deep breath you need before a dive. Checking Cressi's size chart before buying matters more than paying extra for a custom suit.
